According to Joel Sherman, the Mets are stepping up talks and interest in John Lackey. This stems from the fact that clubs seem willing to give big deals to the run of the mill guys like Randy Wolf ( 3 for $27 million from the Brewers). There is a general feeling in baseball that the rest of the free agent scrum like Joel Pineiro, Jason Marquis, Jon Garland, all expect or are looking for 3-4 year deals.
Officials in the Mets organization seem to be split as to whether or not to overpay the little guys or the big guy. To me this situation is twofold and was summed up well in a comment on MetsBlog.
Old Backstop says, "I’d would rather overpay real talent than overpay mediocrity, and very strong starting pitching heals almost all wounds." That being said, I do not want the Mets to sign John Lackey and abandon the Matt Holliday talks. To me, Lackey is not that good to consider him the end all be all of your off season spending. Also, Lackey would hopefully pitch in around 30 games next year while Matt Holliday would play in hopefully 155 games. I know the importance of good pitching, but why do we have to sacrifice one to get the other?
