Jayson Stark is reporting that the Mets are having internal discussions about whether or not to bring back Pedro Martinez on a one year deal. Pedro has made it known that he wants to beat the $7.5 million deal that Brad Penny signed.
I am really confused by what the Mets are thinking. I truly believe that this is probably just a situation where the Mets are going through the board and talking about everyone that is available. I cannot see Minaya spending this much on Pedro. Although he certainly has something left in the tank, it isn't much. If Pedro was looking for a couple million dollars, I would see Omar as being interested. I wouldn't but I could see organizational interest popping up.
Pedro is a charismatic guy that used to be lights out. That said, later in his career, he has had to transform himself into a changing speeds, deception guy. This has only really worked for 1-2 trips through the batting order for Pedro, not much more. The problem immediately becomes that he is a five inning, maybe six on a good day, pitcher.
It is no secret the Mets need a 200 inning guy. At this point, with Marquis signing with the Nats, I feel more and more that the Mets are leaning towards trading for a starter. The Reds seem like an obvious choice (Arroyo, Harang), but who else?
