According to Jon Heyman, the Mets are preparing to make a one year offer to Bengie Molina for about $6 million and an option for a second year. Minaya seems to believe that the competition for Molina will not be in the same price range for a catcher as the Mets. Heyman mentions the Royals, Blue Jays, Rockies and Giants as all having interest in a catcher.
These other teams seem smarter the the Mets if they do not think there is value on the market for such a salary. Quite frankly, I think Bengie Molina is worth about $3 million and that's it. I know what he used to be, and he isn't that anymore. I also know what he used to weigh, and he doesn't weigh that anymore. He is a slow, fat, old catcher that hit 20 homeruns last year. Wow. You will have to excuse my lack of excitement. We do not need to spend $6-12 million of this guy. It is a waste of money. You should be able to get a number 3 or 4 starter on the market this year for that money. That would be much more beneficial to the Mets.
Here's to hoping Molina slips through our fingers and signs with someone else.
