Although there are certainly a lot of issues the Mets need to deal with this offseason, the catching position is probably garnering the least amount of attention. There has been daily chatter about John Lackey, Matt Holliday, Chone Figgins, and even Roy Halladay and Adrian Gonzalez, but not much about the position once manned by the great Mike Piazza.
Oh, how far we've come since the days when you could pencil in Mike for .315-.325, 30+ Homers, 100+ RBI. Check out Brian Schneider's line from last year. It's embarrassing. The problem is though, there are only a handful of decent catchers in the league. I think it might be time to write in Omir Santos name for two-thirds of the season and see what he can do on a cheap salary and use the money elsewhere. Is he really going to be worse than the rest of the heap out there? Olivo, Bard, Barrett, Molina? Not exactly awe-inspiring.
At least Santos is young, wants to play hard and has shown a little fire and flare for a big hit or two. Is there anyway someone could find Todd Hundley's phone number? The two-time all star is 40 years old. Younger than free agent Brad Ausmus by the way.
