This is just a fun post for Mets fans to enjoy and relive the glory days. Some of it is based on possibilities, yet some is not. I thought, in light of Wally Backman and Tim Teufel being named organizational manager this week, I would assemble the ultimate coaching staff for Mets fans. Most notably Mets fans from the mid-eighties. Take a look.
- Manager-Wally Backman- Played the game the right way, had a lot success managing in the minors, and he has a checkered past. What would be better for the team AND the tabloids.
- Bench Coach-Tim Teufel- The voice of reason when Backman is going off the deep end, Teufel keeps the ship even keel as much as he can. Also, steps in for the 20-30 games Backman gets thrown out of.
- Pitching Coach-Ron Darling- Have you read his book? Listened to him broadcast? Although he lacks experience, the guy is a genius.
- Hitting Coach-Keith Hernandez- The most clutch hitter of Mets history would probably be the first to be fired for calling his players out in the papers and for eating tootsie pops on the bench. However, Keith also would be great for the back pages.
- First Base-Len Dykstra- The fiery Dykstra would be great for baserunners, but may get in a fight or two. Also, Dykstra could be suspended for wagering on steal attempts or trying to sell financial advice to first basemen.
- Third Base- Mr. Nancy Lopez (his nickname during his stint with the Mets)- Ray Knight has experience as coach and manager and would probably try to cross the line and jump back at third base. Plus the former Golden Gloves boxer could teach D-Wright a thing or two about toughening up.
- Bullpen Catching Coach-Gary Carter- He would be good for the catchers, but no one could stand him to be in the dugout.
- Bullpen Pitching Coach-Rodger McDowell- The former Mets reliever/prankster has the knowledge and has the experience as pitching coach for the Braves. Putting him back in the pen to hopefully stir up some of the pranks and keep the team light-hearted (especially with Carter out there).
