So I turned the 1971 Mets Yearbook show on earlier that I DVR-ed last week. I have to say I cannot wait for the next show. It was truly a cool show to watch on several levels. Some notes and observations:
- The Mets led the league in attendance that season with over 2 million fans. Undoubtedly this was
because people were still feeling good about the Miracle Mets of only two years prior to that. Sheas was an electric place to be.
- The old footage of stars like Seaver, Tug, Dimaggio, Satchel Paige, Kiner, and others is really cool for me. I grew up a product of the eighties so I missed seeing all those guys play the game. An awesome clip was during the Old Timer's Day that year, Ralph Branca was pitching and Bobby Thomson came up to plate (Shot Heard Round the World). They actually stopped for a second, talked by the mound, and switched places and had Thomson pitch to Branca. It was neat. Branca flied out so Thomson won that matchup too.
- Seaver was awesome that season for the Mets by the way. He was 20-10 with 20 complete games and an ERA of 1.76. He only gave up 210 hits in 286 innings while striking out 289. Pretty sick right? He finished second in the Cy Young vote to Ferguson Jenkins too.
