I am going to run through the Top 6 free agents I think the Mets should not sign. I am singling out specific players from the Top 50 list from MLBTR. They will cover positions where the Mets have question marks. Much like the Do Not Call Registry, here is my Do Not Call List for Omar Minaya:
- Rich Harden- I know we need starting pitchers, but here is the deal. Harden is a five inning wonder. That's it. Rarely, if ever does he stretch out to seven or eight innings. Also, after giving up eleven long balls in 2008, he more than doubled that to 23 in 2009 and in less innings. No thanks, move on.
- Mike Cameron- This 37 year old strikes out a lot. He will hit you a few homers and play good defense, but at .250, it just isn't worth it. No second tour for Mike, move on.
- Orlando Hudson- I understand wanting Orlando a couple years ago, however, he is past his prime. He is better defensively than Castillo, but after Castillo's rebound this past season, the offensive numbers are pretty close. Castillo's bad 2008 is out of the norm too, so there is every indication he will remain at least similar to his productive 2009.
- Joel Pineiro- See post from November 10th
- Nick Johnson- Nick is a good hitter, when healthy. Problem is, he is never healthy. Think of him as a bearded version of Moises Alou. He missed all of 2007 and parts of several other seasons. Not what this team needs, more injuries.
- Benjie Molina- What do the Mets need a fat, slow, 35 year old catcher for? I think I would rather they called up Todd Hundley and invited him to spring training. Just because he hit 20 home runs last year doesn't make up for his .285 OBP. That is just gross. How about his 13 walks in almost 500 at bats? He is going to demand way too much money that could be used elsewhere.
