In the New York Post today, George King writes that the Yankees seem to be headed after Manny Ramirez if they do not sign Mark Teixeira. The Yanks lost a couple big bats named Giambi & Abreu from last year and need somebody capable to bat in front of or behind A-Rod.
Manny and super-agent Scott Boras are looking for 5 years and in upwards of $100 million. However, no team is likely to give that. King suggests the Yankees would be willing to go for 3 years at around $20 million each.
Although they have spent about $240 million dollars on two pitchers already, the yankees cleared almost $90 million from the payroll this year with by clearing Giambi, Abreu, and other salaries. Consequently, there remains money for the spending.
I would imagine that Manny certainly becomes a Yankee if the Red Sox sign Teixeira. It would be open season and I am sure that Scott Boras wants his chip (Teixeira) to fall in Boston so he can dial as fast as possible to Cashman and throw Manny at him.
King also brings up the option of Xavier Nady being trade bait if the Yankees sign Manny. Immediately my mouth began to salivate when I read that. I love Nady, have from his first week with the Mets. I know there is very little chance of the Mets getting him from the Yankees. I can dream can't I? He only made $3.35 million this year, is arbitration eligible and a free agent after 2009. He is that right handed bat we need, a solid defender, a great clubhouse guy, etc.
How solid and productive is an outfield of Nady, Beltran, and Church? Great defense, great arms, 120-130 doubles a years, and 300 RBI. I will take it. Everyone say it with me, "Manny to the Yanks!"
Manny is a big cry-baby and the Yankees already have enough drama with Hank and A-Rod. Boros needs to get real, Manny for 100mil? Right. Boros needs drug treatment.
