The winter meeting of Major League Baseball have begun. The Mets, and all the other teams have descended upon the city of Las Vegas in hopes of improving their roster without breaking the banks. Barely checked into Vegas, the Mets immediately went to work. According to David Lennon, Omar, Jeff Wilpon, and crew wined and dined Francisco Rodriguez for 4 hours on Sunday night, laying the groundwork for a serious run at the closer.
Afterwards, Omar seemed confident that the Mets would leave the meetings with results in the form of roster additions and/or subtractions.
I am not surprised about the meeting. It has been widely publicized that Omar would be meeting with all available top tier closers (K-Rod, Fuentes, Wood, Hoffman) at the meetings. Also, it is not surprising that Omar met for such a long time on the eve of the meetings. The sense I have always gotten from Omar is that when he knows what he wants, he is tenacious about it. Jeff Wilpon, the money behind the man, being at the meetings from the outset is intriguing to me. It sends me the message that the Mets are all business from the start. If something arises that they want, I feel Wilpon is there so they can immediately make a decision and pull the trigger.
Minaya clearly has an agenda. In his comments in recent weeks, he has all but stated that he has deals and moves in place or close to being in place. The sense I get is that if the dominoes fall one way, he will play one set of moves, if the dominoes fall another way, he will react differently. I have been uneasy at certain points this off season, however, I am now feeling a little more confident that Minaya and the Mets have direction and will fill the needs of the club. I sense the Mets are prepared to move all-in when they feel they have the best hand.
We cannot be in Vegas without some cliches can we?
