Kerry Wood is drawing some interest from the Mets, according to Chris De Luca of the Sun Times. The big right hander had a great season as closer for the Cubs last season and had 34 saves in 40 chances. It is worth noting that after May 25th, he blew only two saves the rest of the season. He struck out 84 in 66 innings pitched and only walked 18 batters. De Luca seems to think Wood will get a two year deal with an option for a third.
As it is being talked about in several different sources this off season, Minaya seems to be after a closer and a setup guy that has closer experience. I think Kerry Wood would be a great fit for the Mets in this situation. With a fallback in place, they would be fine if Wood got injured.
A two year deal for $18 million with a vesting option for $10 million if he pitches enough innings sounds completely viable for the Mets and Wood. Also, they could then focus on an additional setup guy in Putz or Street.
What does the bullpen look like then?
Kerry Wood
J.J. Putz/Huston Street
Joe Smith
Pedro Feliciano
Duaner Sanchez
Brian Stokes
Armas Jr./Figgy/? (long reliever)
If this were the bullpen on opening day, I would be satisfied. I am assuming Heilman and Schoeneweis will both be sent packing. Certainly Heilman will be traded somewhere with a prospect or two for Street or a 5th starter type. The Tigers are apparently the other team showing interest in Wood. Las Vegas should start opening doors. Contrary to what De Luca writes, I do not think there will be a lot of action specifically at the winter meetings. Expect a couple trades and maybe a signing or two. However, Sabathia, Lowe, and Teixeira are not playing out anytime soon probably. Burnett may or may not sign soon depending on if he gets a quick 5 year offer (reports are conflicting now if the Braves have offered 5 guaranteed or 4 with and option.
Monday starts the high stakes game in Vegas. Let's hope the Mets are a successful high roller, not just a whale.
