Ken Rosenthal reports on Foxsports.com today that Scott Boras is being Scott Boras again. Derek Lowe is seeking a Zito-like deal apparently. We know how well that $126 million spent looks right now.
Lowe seems like a solid signing for about three years. He is 35 years old. However, he hasn't ever gone on the DL. I like the fact that he was a great closer in the past and has done well as a starter.
I get the sense that all free agent pitchers right now will be pushing for that 5 or more year deal. Working against them however, is the fact that Dempster just took a four year deal and there doesn't seem to be too many teams willing to talk past 4 years. The Yankees being the exception and Sabathia being an exception. Unlike the flooded closer market, lots of teams are in the hunt for a starter or more. The list includes the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Red Sox, Dodgers, Braves, and more. Those are all big markets and spenders for the most part as well.
I hope the Mets resign Perez. I prefer the 27 year old lefty to anyone on the market except Sabathia. He is a safe bet to stay healthy. Perez has made strides from a couple poor seasons in Pittsburgh and by now, you pretty much know what you will get year to year. He will have about 15 wins, and ERA under 4.00, and strike out about a batter/inning. I know he walks a lot, however, he limits hits/inning very well. He has only given up 320 hits in his last 373 inning (2007 & 2008)
